OP Corporate Bank provides EUR 8 million for the modernisation of Jūrmala’s water and wastewater infrastructure
OP Corporate Bank plc Latvian branch has provided EUR 8 million in financing to SIA Jūrmalas ūdens for the reconstruction of the Jūrmala–Riga wastewater pressure pipeline. The project involves upgrading a significant section of wastewater infrastructure to improve the safety and reliability of the system and reduce environmental risks.
The wastewater pressure pipeline to be reconstructed carries wastewater from Jūrmala and Spilve village in Mārupe Municipality to Riga’s wastewater treatment system, making its safe and uninterrupted operation essential for the region’s water and wastewater services. The project will involve reconstructing 11 kilometres of the existing pressure pipeline and preparing the construction design for a second pipeline, which is planned to be built in the future. The pressure pipeline will also enable the connection of wastewater discharge from Babīte and Piņķi.
“Safe and reliable water and wastewater infrastructure is essential both for people’s quality of life and for protecting the environment. We highly value SIA Jūrmalas ūdens and its long-term approach to responsible operations. Investments of this kind in infrastructure renewal help reduce potential environmental risks and ensure the continuity of services that are essential to society,” says Elmārs Prikšāns, General Manager of the Latvian branch of OP Corporate Bank plc.
“The reconstruction of the Jūrmala–Riga pressure pipeline is part of our long-term investment plan to gradually renew and modernise Jūrmala’s water and wastewater infrastructure. Maintaining ageing infrastructure requires disproportionately high expenditure, while repairs alone are not enough to ensure its long-term operation. We are therefore making targeted investments in reconstructing the existing pressure pipeline and designing a second pipeline to ensure uninterrupted, high-quality services for residents and businesses in Jūrmala and Mārupe Municipality and to prepare for expanding the system’s capacity in line with future needs,” says Raimonds Arājs, Chairman of the Management Board of SIA Jūrmalas ūdens.
The construction design and works for the reconstruction of the Jūrmala–Riga wastewater pressure pipeline will be carried out by SIA Binders, which was selected through an open tender.
Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2027 and be completed by mid-2029.
About SIA Jūrmalas ūdens
SIA Jūrmalas ūdens is a climate-smart water utility providing centralised water supply and wastewater services in the city of Jūrmala.
The establishment of Jūrmala’s centralised water supply and wastewater system can be traced back to 1929, when, alongside the development of Ķemeri as a resort, two artesian wells were drilled and a water supply network and water tower were built.
Today, drinking water in Jūrmala is sourced from 20 artesian wells and treated at four drinking water treatment facilities. Approximately 2.7 million m³ of drinking water is produced annually, or around 7,300 m³ per day.
