OP Corporate Bank plc has granted SIA “Getliņi EKO” a long-term investment loan of EUR 15 million to finance the construction of the “Northern Corner” waste disposal cell, as well as to partially refinance the company’s previous investments. “Modern waste management infrastructure is an essential component of the circular economy. SIA ‘Getliņi EKO’, as one of the leading representatives of this sector, will contribute to Latvia’s progress towards achieving long-term sustainability goals, while ensuring safe and responsible waste management for both the company’s clients and nearby residents. Sustainability plays a significant role in the values of the OP Group, therefore we especially appreciate the opportunity to be a partner in the implementation of such projects,” says Elmārs Prikšāns, Head of the OP Corporate Bank plc Latvia Branch.

To ensure the disposal of non-recyclable municipal and other non-hazardous waste in accordance with environmental protection requirements and best waste management practices, waste at the “Getliņi” landfill is disposed of in specially constructed cells. These are specially engineered areas with a waterproof base that prevents leachate from the deposited waste from entering groundwater. Once such a cell is filled, it is covered with a layer of clay to contain gas formed from the waste and is then greened.

The construction of a new cell for the disposal of non-recyclable waste — the “Northern Corner” — covering an area of 9 hectares, began in 2024 with the design phase, and in the spring of 2025 the first phase of development started, including construction works and the partial excavation of previously deposited waste over an area of approximately 1,200,000 m³.

“The upcoming ‘Northern Corner’ waste disposal cell will not only ensure the safe disposal of non-recyclable municipal waste, but will also provide an opportunity to reduce historical groundwater pollution that originated during the Soviet period, when waste was disposed of in ways that did not meet modern environmental protection standards. Therefore, it is important that the project progresses according to schedule, with a significant role also played by our cooperation partners,” notes Imants Stirāns, Chairman of the Board of SIA “Getliņi EKO”.

In total, the development of the new waste disposal cell is planned to be implemented in four phases. By the end of this year, it is planned to complete the construction works of the first phase, as well as the preparation of the base before waste deposition, which is part of the second development phase of the project.
